Robert Dunn

Fort Collins, Colorado
Robert Dunn has worked at, and advised, multiple technology start-ups in the San Francisco Bay Area. After working as an auditor for Deloitte Haskins and Sells and the Defense Contract Audit Agency, Robert took his first job at a technology start-up with Quintus Corporation. Quintus developed the programming language Prolog, which was the forerunner of Java. Some of the engineers from Quintus went on to join the original Java technology team at Sun Microsystems. Others went on to form WebLogic, which developed one of the early Java application server that fueled the boom of the Internet. BEA acquired WebLogic in 1998 for $190MM (against capital raised of $12MM). Robert stayed on at BEA as the Division Controller of WebLogic, and then joined the dot.com technology start-up CrossCommerce, as employee #5. After helping the company grow to 90 employees, Robert had to oversee nine rounds of layoffs, and wind up operations with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing during the Dot.com bust. Hence, he has experienced incredible success and seen tremendous failure first-hand.Since CrossCommerce, Robert has had several senior finance and advisory positions in a range of technology start-ups:Controller & Director of HR – Mindshare Design (SaaS)VP of Finance – Gauntlet Systems (testing software); acquired by BorlandVP of Finance – Mocana (Embedded Security)Advisor & Statutory CFO – Input Factory (survey application); acquired by GoogleVP of Finance – Instart LogicAdvisor – AppMonkie (emergency notification application)Director – emtrain (legal compliance and learning library SaaS company)Director of wholly owned Indian subsidiaries Mocana Solutions Private Ltd and Instart Logic Private LtdCurrently Robert is the CFO of Wavefront, a real-time monitoring SaaS company, backed by Sutter Hill Ventures, Tenaya Capital and Sequoia.
